Marni Soupcoff: Bribing needy students to study flunks on two counts


The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is now investigating the possibility of paying kids in disadvantaged communities to do well in school. The idea is that kids who passed all their classes and performed the normally unexceptional feat of showing up every day for instruction would be rewarded with some extra money.
It’s a terrible suggestion even on its face: What kind of life lessons will the board be instilling if it teaches kids that doing the absolute bare minimum — basically anything short of not being completely useless — is cause for celebration and treats?

Will there be an extra $10 on offer for every student who refrains from spray painting graffiti in the hallways? A cool $20 for getting through a semester without threatening a teacher with bodily harm? Read More »
