Niqabs and burkas: Harmless garments that ensure modesty or instruments of male repression? That debate has cropped up again on the Letters page, sparked by a column last week by Afsun Qureshi-Smith, titled “The walking coffin.”

On Monday, two female letter writers defended the wearing of these garments. In the words of one: “If covered women are ‘silenced’ or ‘walking coffins’ then, by those same standards, women who wear miniskirts or bikinis are promiscuous and are giving a green light to those who want to touch them in a sexual manner.”

Her words sparked more than a dozen replies.

“I was brought up to believe that modesty is derived from who you are as a person, not what ‘uniform’ you wear,” wrote M. Watson. “This is not about modesty. To feel superior to someone wearing a mini-skirt or bikini is not modesty; it a sense of superiority. I am 61 and don’t wear mini-skirts. I try to be a modest person, but I do not think that my mode of attire is better than others or that others who do not share my beliefs or religion are somehow inferior to me.” Read More »
