John Ivison: Larry Miller — The voice in Harper’s ear



Ontario MP Larry Miller has been elevated to cult hero status within the Conservative caucus. Miller is the voice of principle in caucus, Alberta MP James Rajotte says.

When Larry Miller stands up in the Conservative party caucus, he is, by all accounts, hard to ignore. Large, raw and loud, the Ontario MP looks tough enough to go 10 rounds with Chuck Norris and still be able to blow bubbles with beef jerky.

He hardly seems the type to be cowed into silence by anyone, far less the unelected teenage scribblers in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Most Canadians won’t have heard of Mr. Miller. But he is an important voice inside the Conservative caucus — one respected and listened to by everyone, up to and including the Prime Minister.

“We call him the Keeper of the Flame — the voice of principle and straightforward talk in caucus,” said James Rajotte, the Edmonton MP.

“It’s no exaggeration to say he is the most loved and appreciated person in caucus,” said Dean Del Mastro, the Conservative MP for Peterborough who awarded him the Keeper of the Flame title, previously held by the now-retired Myron Thompson. Read More »
