No Surprise At Lack Of Support

Based on Toronto City Councils record on honoring agreements with business the following is not surprising. I certainly want to see the waterfront developed for the citizens of Toronto and for tourists but I don't see this project meeting that criteria. It looks like they have just moved the Spadina/Queens Quay model east.

East Bayfront Project

Miller no help for studio
By ZEN RURYK, CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF

A major film studio's waterfront operation will fade to black on Feb. 21.

Steve Mirkopoulos, president of Cinespace Film Studios, said yesterday that efforts to get Mayor David Miller to intervene in his company's fight to continue operating out of its huge Queen's Quay location have failed.

"It doesn't make me feel very good at all," said Mirkopoulos. "We have been in this business for 20 years and I'm left speechless. We just do not understand it."

The Toronto Economic Development Corp. (TEDCO) -- the city agency that owns the Cinespace waterfront land -- informed the film company in December that it had to leave to make way for the long-planned East Bayfront revitalization project.

Cinespace officials say they delivered the mayor 30 letters from supporters and an online petition with 5,000 signatures, requesting a delay of the studio closing for at least 18 months.
