OTTAWA -The louder the Liberals shout about how much more reputable they are than the dastardly Conservatives, the faster one is inclined to count the spoons.
Incredible as it may seem, the party that brought you the sponsorship scandal is now attacking the Tories for an "election fraud" that, if proven, represents a "gross breach of public trust" -- a subject on which they have some expertise.
The Liberals rolled out one of their most able performers yesterday, Dominic LeBlanc, to charge that the Conservatives have "orchestrated" an election financing scheme aimed at circumventing the Elections Act on spending limits.
"Is this any different to the athlete who uses performance-enhancing drugs to win a race," said Mr. LeBlanc. Liberal bloggers are already suggesting this is the "Conservative Adscam."
Provided that no one looks too closely at the facts --probable, given the arcane subject matter -- they may get away with impaling the Conservatives on their own "mismanagement and corruption" sword.
The centre of the storm is a claim by the Liberals that the Tories breached election spending limits by more than a million dollars in the final days of the 2006 campaign by passing off national advertising costs as regional ads for local candidates.

the dummy award, goes to each and every person that thinks what the conservatives did, was ok. So then because of the misdeeds of a former government, was bigger in terms of dollars, this makes what the conservatives have done, ok. Let's not forget that the conservatives have already been caught breaking the rules regarding finances, and quietly admitted to it waiting until everyone was drunk and sleepy from xmas tryptophan.
In fact maybe the dummy award isn't good enough, perhaps a 'I like it up the bum' award is appropiate. Because now we have a new breed of government supporters willing to go to bat for their government on the first whiff of a scandal. "ITS NOT AS BAD AS THE LIBERALS!!!" they cry.
Perhaps Ralph Goodale can tell a tale of being falsely accused, right in the middle of an election...
