Don't ignore panel's workSolid study on school safety cannot fall victim to political timidness |
There is good stuff in the report released last week by the Toronto District School Board's school safety panel, led by lawyer Julian Falconer.
The question is, will the panel -- and the board -- see fit to act on everything they find? Or will they selectively cherry-pick changes that can be implemented without ruffling too many political feathers?
The panel's observations on safety conditions at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate where 15-year-old Jordan Manners was fatally shot last May come across as fair, detailed and thoughtful and are worth reading -- find it at tdsb.on.ca.
While the panel was supposed to wrap up their work this month, they have asked for more time and money beyond their initial $489,000 to work until November because the issues they are looking at stretch to other schools -- and they've hinted they are serious.
