Clear the track ...Strike or settlement? TTC riders could learn fate today |
Transit riders could learn today whether a strike will ground the Red Rocket.
The TTC's largest union -- representing 8,900 drivers and other workers who have been in a legal strike position since April 1 -- is to provide an update at a press conference this morning.
A frustrated Bob Kinnear, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 113, warned one week ago a strike notice could come this week if negotiators failed to hammer out a deal. The union has promised to give 48 hours notice of any job action.

But Kinnear said the union was giving more than the required notice in the hope that Toronto Mayor David Miller, currently on an overseas trip, would get personally involved.
"We said that we would give at least 48 hours' notice of any withdrawal of services. We are giving twice as much time because we know the mayor is in China and we want to give him some time to step into this situation and do what is fair."
Kinnear said "there is still time for the mayor to stop this action — everybody knows the mayor calls the shots when it comes to the TTC settlement. He did so in 2005 and he will do so again in 2008." Unquote
