John Oakley on the TTC strike set up: Mayor Miller will play the role of civic superhero, swooshing back from China to save the day
Lights, camera, action! The union representing transit workers is preparing to walk out on Monday morning at 4. Come Monday, once again, the city could be in chaos, or scrambling to make alternate arrangements for a ride. The last time around, in '06, a wildcat walkout bollixed the system at rush hour, and just the year before, the mayor had to step in and "save the day." If the script holds, and the smart money is betting it will, he'll swoosh back from China just in time to reprise the role of civic superhero. After all, why would Bob Kinnear and company want to leave Miller looking impotent before an increasingly cynical public? Their fortunes are intertwined. Each beholden to the other. You think it's coincidence the union made a tidy donation to Adam Giambrone's campaign fund? The golden rule of Toronto's public service unions says, you don't harm the goose that lays the golden egg. So, be prepared for the latest instalment of the dog and pony show, and to cough up more for a ticket to ride. We've seen this movie before. We know the score, how it all ends, and we're all familiar with the credit crawl. It's a co-production, and the prize for best actor in a supporting role: Congratulations, Mayor Miller.
John Oakley can be heard from 5:45 a.m.-10 a.m. EST Monday to Friday on AM 640 Toronto Radio
