Do mandatory minimums work?

Re:`Tough' drug bill all about politics,

Editorial May 10

Besides being an utter failure in reducing crime, mandatory minimum sentences distort the justice system by undermining the traditional role of the judge and transferring sentencing power to the prosecutor. That is not how the justice system is supposed to work. I hope the Tories stop their political posturing and provide the requested evidence substantiating the validity of mandatory minimums.
