Today's Iggy Moment

Ignatieff is alive. EI talks, maybe not

For those of you keeping track, the new spirit of cooperation behind the joint Conservative/Liberal talks on Employment Insurance reform lasted ... 0 seconds:

OTTAWA–Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has doubts about the Conservative government's commitment to employment-insurance reform – the basis of the deal forged to avoid an election last month and the potential spark for campaign this fall if the two sides don't make a deal.

The first meeting of the Liberal-Conservative working group on EI reform was yesterday, and Ignatieff blamed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government for dragging its feet to the negotiating table.

"We note that the government has taken five weeks to get its act together on this. We were ready to go at the end of June with this committee. We're now meeting only today. I don't know why they've taken so long to get going. It's a sign," Ignatieff said.

On the other hand, it's the first proof we've had in some time that Michael Ignatieff is still with us.

My mother calls Michael Ignatieff "the Russian." She means it in the best possible sense, of course, and the moniker has caught on with friends and family, including fans of Ignatieff. So when I recently received an email with the subject line, "the Russian has a kitten," I knew which Russian was in question.
