Ludicrous To The Sublime...

Enbridge Inc. said a 91-mile pipeline that runs from Ontario, Canada, to New York was shut down after about a gallon of petroleum-based product was found during a sewer installation project Monday. The company said all the product has been cleaned up and crews were working to find the source.

John Ivison: NDP behaviour police target plastic bags and forgetful husbands

Another 10¢ down the drain

Men — who among you can’t relate to the following? You’re packed off to buy the weekly groceries. As you’re walking out the door, your wife reminds you to take the re-usable shopping bags. You mumble in the affirmative, and then go back to debating with yourself whether Sean Connery drove the Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger or Thunderball (the answer is both).

When you get to the check-out and the assistant asks if you have your own bags, you are forced to admit that you do but they’re still in the hall closet at home.

It’s not that we deliberately set out to befoul the planet but we have a lot going on in our brains and don’t fancy trying to juggle 200 bucks worth of groceries back to the car. We need the option of being gouged 5¢ for the privilege of buying a plastic bag by the grasping grocery giants. Read More »

Adrian MacNair: B.C. collects green award while emissions increase

Further to the blog entry I wrote on Saturday about the futility of the transportation carbon tax, Environment Canada has some damning new figures for the province of British Columbia.

As B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell was accepting an award in Copenhagen for introducing a carbon tax, Environment Canada released a report that shows the only province in Canada to report an increase in greenhouse gas emissions from major industries in 2008 was our own beautiful B.C.

These figures cover “facility greenhouse gas emissions”, which result from power plants and heavy industries such as mining, pulp and paper, natural gas and petroleum extraction. And guess what? Our province has increased these emissions thanks largely to oil and gas extraction, thanks to the Campbell government subsidies to oil and gas companies, which have produced record royalties in the past three years.

David Suzuki: Climate issue is the same as slavery
Posted: December 17, 2009, 2:30 PM by NP Editor

Evan Solomon interviewed David Suzuki on the CBC the other day about the Copenhagen climate summit.

The whole interview is here. (Go ahead: Drive yourself nuts)

But let's highlight the bit below, in which Mr. Suzuki explains how Ottawa's efforts to safeguard jobs and the economy is the equivalent of the U.S. southern states building a society based on slavery. Solomon gives him a chance to backtrack on this ("David, just for the record, and I know you're passionate, but is comparing this to slavery, is that fair, to demonize the other side like that?") but Suzuki is sticking to it. Trying to save jobs in Alberta is the same as enslaving human beings.

It's apparently also the same as the space race, because people thought that would be expensive too, and in the end we beat the Russians, so there! (Note to David: They didn't finance the space race by closing down Alberta and charging everyone else a big new tax).

All the president’s ClimateGate deniers

My syndicated column today looks at the global warming cultists in the Obama administration who are working overtime to paper over the ClimateGate scandal. Yesterday, Phil Jones, the head of the U.K.’s Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia stepped aside while the university investigates. Penn State prof Michael Mann, purveyor of the infamous hockey stick graph of spiking global temperatures peddled by Al Gore, is also under investigation. GOP Sen. James Inhofe, vigilant watchdog over global warming shenanigans, wants Babs Boxer to investigate. As Obama heads to Copenhagen to crusade for massive interventions to stop global warming, a new Harris Poll shows a significant shift in public opinion away from the cult of climate change. Jonah Goldberg dissects the groupthink that has gripped the global warming industry and its media enablers. Ed Driscoll takes you on a tour through global warming evolution in six and a half minutes. Well now: “Moderate” (liberal) GOP candidates/lawmakers led by GOP cap-and-tax 8′er Mark Kirk are running as fast as they can from the global warming hot mess.

OTTAWA–He has likened flying across the Atlantic Ocean to child abuse, equating their impact on human life.

But a thousand kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions spewed into the atmosphere by a jumbo jet is a pittance compared to the damage Canada is set to do at next week's global climate change summit in Copenhagen, says famed British muckraker George Monbiot.

No one person can convince the Conservative government to change its climate course, accept stronger emissions reduction targets and crack down on Alberta's oil sands. Three opposition parties with a majority of MPs in the House of Commons have tried and failed repeatedly to do so for the last four years.
