I Was Under The Impression Everyone Was Covered By The Charter

But it appears that there is a growing list of designated groups that receive additional rights. Is this not a violation of my rights? I don't want to seem cynical but it would seem that the Ontario Human Rights Commission is feathering their own nest....they are unable to handle their current caseload.

Human-rights protection urged for transsexuals

March 6.

Although gender identity is not explicitly identified in the Ontario Human Rights Code, trans people do have its protection.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission has, for a number of years, successfully addressed complaints of discrimination and harassment against transgender people under the ground of "sex."

While this interpretive approach is supported by case law, the protections are in many ways invisible. Lack of explicit inclusion in the legislation means that trans people's distinct experiences of discrimination remain unacknowledged. Transsexual and transgender people face extreme ignorance and hostility in our society, resulting in significant discrimination, and social and economic disadvantage.

Amending the code would provide clarity and greater recognition of the dignity of transgender people, and would leave no doubt, in the eyes of the public or the law, that they are entitled to the same human-rights protections as anyone else.
