Thank Gawd For Small Blessings

But wasn't it Stats Can who say crime is down during a period when gang crime was at its peak?

Older, wiser -- and safer

Canada's seniors are 20 times less likely to be assaulted, robbed or sexually assaulted than young people, Statistics Canada reported yesterday.

The numbers are drawn from StatsCan's General Social Survey on victimization in 2004 and in the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey in 2005.

StatsCan said Canadians between 55 and 64 report they have been victimized at four times the rate of their over 65 counterparts. Young people aged 15 to 24 are the most frequent victims, the survey found.

"The older people get, they're more cautious, they're maybe physically not in the same kind of situations as younger people," said David Cravit, of 50-Plus Group, an Internet portal for older people.

The study found that regardless of age, Canadians are most likely to be victimized by someone known to them.
