Calgary's first automated public toilet opened this morning in Tomkins Square - a busy park along 17th Avenue - in an attempt to provide more washrooms in the downtown and the Beltline.
The toilet, which cost $220,000, is part of a pilot project by the city to determine how suitable the toilets are in terms of usage, public acceptance and safety.
The fully automatic toilets self-sanitize and monitor the length of time each user is in the restroom to minimize loitering and crime.
It will initially be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The costly toilet will be up for review in July when a public toilet strategy for the downtown and the Beltline is expected to be complete.
