Tory rips Miller on air
Talk show host and former -- possibly future -- Toronto mayoral candidate John Tory took a swing at Mayor David Miller and council last night for the handling of the two-week-old civic workers' strike. The on-air jabs, that included a plan to help respect Toronto residents during the strike, may be the first real public sign the fallen Ontario Progressive Conservative leader could be positioning himself for another run for the city's top job.
"It's a farce that they are not meeting (Monday)," Tory said, speaking about today's council meeting which was cancelled due to the strike.
During his one-hour radio show on CFRB 1010 last night, Tory called delays experienced by residents at picket lines in front of trash depots "unacceptable."
"They are hurting people that have nothing to do with this; they just pay the bills," Tory said.
He saved his strongest criticism for elected officials.
"City council should be meeting," Tory said, adding that meeting should have an agenda with just two items -- an update on the strike and a call for council members to give up their 2009 pay raise.
"Let's see the mayor and the council roll back their pay increase," he said.
Tory was defeated by Miller in the 2003 election. Following that he took the helm of the provincial PC party, losing the 2007 election to the Liberals. He resigned as party leader earlier this year.
Rumours have been swirling that Tory could be planning to run for mayor in the November 2010 municipal election.
