...born and living in Toronto for 77 years, working and paying taxes to the city, province and Ottawa for 55+ years and still paying, taxes that eventually made it virtually impossible to keep my home so it had to be sold and necessary to move into a MARKET VALUE apartment but still contributing to the $1 Billion+ (and you know it will escalate) for the downtrodden (the majority who don't seem to have yet made any significant contribution) and gawd knows how much the cost of moving the elephants to Granby will cost BUT like too many seniors we stay silent for fear of being labelled by the cadre of leftwing politicians, social in-activists and trough feeders.

Oh dear. This is getting embarrassing.
On Wednesday, Jonathan Kay praised a column by the Toronto Star’s Carol Goar, directly violating Rule 14-C in the National Post Employee Handbook, “Thou shalt not say nice things about the Toronto Star.” (Yes the National Post Employee Handbook was written by Moses.)
Now, less than 24 hours later, the Star has printed another column worthy of praise, this time by David Olive (who at least has the saving grace of having once worked at the Post). Olive challenges the official orthodoxy of people who know nothing about the oil industry, which evidently includes most of the people on the Star’s editorial board, by stating categorically that high oil prices are not the result of a world-wide conspiracy.
And, he adds, Big Oil, as it is known at the Star, hates high prices just as much as consumers do. Because it’s bad for business.
…on Tuesday, as news reporters covering the price spike visited the same pumps, they saw filling stations bereft of customers, or just one lonely motorist filling the tank. A store empty of customers does not make a profitable business.
Second, profit margins for gas-station operators and the refiners that supply them shrink as the retail price rises. If the refiner is suffering a periodic spike in crude prices, it must pass that extra cost on to the gas stations it supplies or go broke. In order not to scare business away, filling stations pare their own profit margin or operate at a loss to keep the selling price as low as possible.
That’s how it works in banking, an industry that hates high interest rates. Higher rates drive away prospective borrowers. And they reduce the “spread,” or gross profit margin, between the suddenly higher interest the bank has to pay on my guaranteed investment certificate and what it’s able to charge borrowers without depressing demand.
When a retailer’s cost of inventory and its operating expenses are low, it can charge you more for it. That’s the Wal-Mart story in a nutshell.
It’s not a conspiracy.
No conspiracy? Good heavens. One hopes Mr. Olive ensured the Star’s editors were amply supplied with smelling salts before they read his article, the better to avoid falling down in a dead faint. On the day he wrote it, those editors filled two section fronts with stories about the horrors of high gas prices and the mean trick Big Oil was playing on innocent Torontonians, with the usual mindless suggestions for alleviating the pain. (“Buy a scooter.” Yeah, that’s going to work. In February. On the 401)
Luckily for Goar and Olive, they can’t be fired. They work for a union shop.

The presence of Muslims in Canada threatens the country’s freedoms and democracy, and only if immigration from Islamic countries is suspended can the cultural deterioration of the country be stopped, controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders told a packed house Monday night in Toronto.
“Our Western culture is far superior to Islamic culture,” Mr. Wilders said. “And only once we are convinced of this will we be able to defend our civilization.”
The event, held at the Canadian Christian College in north Toronto, marked Mr. Wilders’ second stop on a three-city tour. The visit, his first to Canada, is sponsored by the International Free Press Society.
He spoke in London on Sunday, and he will be in Ottawa on Tuesday.
Charles McVety, president of the Christian College, introduced Mr. Wilders to an ebullient crowd as a man with “a prophetic message.”
The leader of Party for Freedom, the third party in the Dutch parliament, Mr. Wilders is better known for his uncompromising position on Islam. His vitriol against the religion has necessitated the hiring of 24-hour personal security for the past seven years.
In his speech on Monday night, he said Muslim immigrants to Europe have changed the social and political landscape there. An increasingly vociferous Islamic lobby has led to the harassment of Christians, female genital mutilation and polygamy, he said, adding that with its own growing Muslim community, Canada faces the same fate.
His career has been driven by a belief that the Koran encourages violence, that moderate Islam is an impossibility and that in allowing Muslims to immigrate to Western nations, these countries open themselves up to inevitable Islamization.
“We need the spirit of resistance to this evil,” he said. “That is our moral duty.”

If the latter, he is not the first NDP MP to get sucked toward this rabbit hole: In 2008, NDP MP Libby Davies stood up in Parliament and read out this petition, which had been signed by over 500 citizens:
Scientific and eyewitness evidence shows that the 9/11 Commission Report is a fraudulent document and that elements within the US government were complicit in the murder of thousands of people on 9/11/2001. Caveats abound: a bevy of pea-green MPs from Quebec, including *three McGill University students and *one Ruth Ellen Brosseau, who spent much of the campaign in Las Vegas and can’t speak French very well; the expectations of huge numbers of Quebec soft-nationalists who may not have “opted in” to Canada to quite the extent certain media outlets insist, and whose conceptions of the NDP may clash noisily against the party’s traditional base; the fact he’ll have less clout in the 41st (majority) Parliament than he did in the 40th (minority) Parliament, and that a majority is now held by the dreaded Stephen Harper. Re: NDP Gains Throw Rivals Into Disarray, April 28.
The rise of the NDP first in Quebec and then in the other parts of Canada can be explained. Quebec is the most “statist” of our provinces. The daycare program, Air Canada’s government mandated repair facility, subsidies to Bombardier, Quebec union laws, etc. The NDP, being statist, is a natural choice for a province dependent on transfer payments and the redistribution of the wealth of others.
Outside of Quebec, it can be attributed to our education system. Since the mid-’70s, education has been skewed to reflect political correctness, social justice, Keynesian economics, the evils of business and the importance of social activism. ...and by the government they mean't the 2/3 of us to pay the freight through various forms of taxes, restrictive legislation, etc. and we saw how well this worked when the ndp were elected in Ontario under Bob Rae. It is one thing to preach give me, give me but entirely different when you become the giver.

After the NDP’s surge in the polls during the last two weeks, it’s no longer impossible to envisage a scenario in which the Governor General asks Jack Layton to form a government — very, very unlikely, but not impossible. Would it be a catastrophe?
Yes and no. What is catastrophic about socialists is their policies, which the other parties are half-adopting anyway — the Liberals more enthusiastically, the Tories less. If NDPers from the government, at least they have to assume responsibility for their programs. Having to actually govern can have a salutary effect on socialists: It can teach some why their ideas don’t work. Trying to govern Ontario certainly taught that lesson to Bob Rae 20 years ago.
Is it an expensive way to educate NDPers? No doubt, but perhaps no more expensive than letting them backseat-drive the country. Read More »

Hopefully not but even if there is a inkling of reality in the cartoon it is probably better than guns, bombs, mobs (G20), etc.
