The City of Toronto's decision to buy a landfill site in southwestern Ontario has created a major political headache for the provincial government.In the wake of the announcement this week, there was an uproar in the London area, where the dump is located. London Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best promised to explore "any and all options" to stop it.The governing Liberals cannot just slough off such protests as they hold all five seats in the area, including those of two cabinet ministers (Steve Peters and Chris Bentley).Editorialized the London Free Press: "In the McGuinty government, Toronto votes appear to trump London votes." If that impression sinks in with the voters, it could be a killer for London-area Liberals in next year's provincial election.Insiders say the garbage issue was a hot topic of discussion at this week's cabinet meeting. But in the end, it was decided the government would do nothing to prevent Toronto's garbage from going to southwestern Ontario.
