The heavy hitters and political backroom boys couldn't find anyone to take on David Miller. So a brave Leaside blonde stepped in — way over her head. Thanks, Jane Pitfield. You did Toronto a big favour this past year.

You gave us a reason to debate our city's future. You mounted a credible campaign, held together for the majority of the time by your sheer doggedness and determination, one diminutive and unknown councillor against the power of the mayor's office and the many kingmakers salivating over continued largesse and access to power. But all signs say it's fallen short — dead on the vine.

With so much stacked against her (inexperienced politically herself, and backed by a weak campaign team weakened further by lack of cash and high-calibre political operatives) it's a miracle the bid survived this long and has inflicted so much damage.
