I understand the City of Toronto has bought a landfill site in the St. Thomas area, although the details are at best sketchy thanks to Mayor Miller's transparency election promise, but is it possible when the pedal hits the metal local residents will start raising a stink, pardon the pun, and start telling Miller to get rid of his garbage at home.

Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien and his allies fighting expansion of the huge Carp Road landfill claimed a battle win yesterday as Waste Management of Canada suspended the process for approving the expansion.
Waste Management of Canada said it has told the Ontario Ministry of the Environment that it wants to suspend the review process for the project, which is to triple the size of the landfill.
A company spokesman said the suspension of the process will give the company up to 56 additional days to go through all the public feedback on its project.
The size and smell of the landfill has become a huge issue in Stittsville, West Carleton and Kanata, with thousands of residents fighting the expansion. City councillors said yesterday that 2,600 responses to the project were formally lodged with the provincial government.
"We're asking for a timeout," said Wes Muir, director of communications with Waste Management. But he said the company hasn't been knocked off its plan to get landfill capacity to handle Ottawa's garbage for 25 years. "We feel there is a need for this landfill."
"It's a good day for Ottawa," said Mayor Larry O'Brien, who has emerged as a big critic of the company's landfill project. "We're just delighted, but cautiously."
He described yesterday as "only a first step" in the campaign to "end dumps in the city of Ottawa."
