They still don't have a motive, but police believe the two affluent 25-year-olds gunned down yesterday outside a friend's condominium had some relationship, however insignificant, with their shooter.
Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux told a press conference this afternoon that there was some "animus" between those killed, Oliver Martin and Dylan Ellis, and the person who fired the fatal bullets.
"I don't believe it's a random act," Giroux said. "The people were the intended targets."
Martin and Ellis were gunned down early Friday morning as they waited outside a housing complex near Queen St. W and Niagara St. They both died from gunshots to their chests, an autopsy confirmed today.
The shooter, believed to be riding a mountain bike, fled the scene to the south shortly after firing several shots.
Detectives are urging residents and any potential witnesses to keep an open mind about what they might have seen - officers are not 100 per cent sure the suspect fled on a mountain bike, but may have had one at some point in the evening. Giroux said since the suspect was on foot or on a bike he probably has a familiarity with the neighbourhood.
Friends trickled past the place where the two young men died, leaving flowers, condolence notes and lighting candles.
"They were just really really good guys," Whitney Geller said, as she laid a bouquet of flowers. "Fun-loving, good people. This is sickening."
