Trashed again! New bins rollingRevamped garbage system will cost you more, of course |
On the one hand Baycrest Ave. resident Joe Simon is pleased the city will be permitting him to order as many new gray garbage bins and extra bag tags as he wants.
But the 41-year-old father of eight is certainly "not happy" he's being charged for the privilege of having his garbage collected, on top of the $209 he already pays for the service in his yearly tax bill.
"I believe when I pay taxes they should include all the services the city provides," he said, a sentiment with which I wholeheartedly agree.
Nevertheless, Simon intends to order two extra-large bins -- which will cost him an extra $380 per year. That does not include any bag tags he uses at $3.10 a pop (over and above the initial five he'll get for free).
He has no illusions -- despite all the rhetoric emanating from City Hall -- that this new garbage tax has the slightest bit to do with being green. For if it were, he said, city officials would not be allowing people to pay to put out as much garbage as they want.
"The city hides behind this veil of being environmentally conscious," he said. "At the end of the day it's all about putting more money into the city's coffers."
