The mayor reiterated his call for a national handgun ban after the fatal shooting of bystander John O'Keefe, who was killed while walking on Yonge Street in January by a legally registered weapon.
He wasn't killed by "a legally registered weapon." He was killed by an individual who was in possession of a weapon that came into his possession in an illegal manner. Mr. O'Keefe would be just as dead if the weapon had not been registered.
If the police had stop and search authority and were supported by the mayor it is possible that weapon would have been found and Mr. O'Keefe, Jane Creba, Justin Manners, et al might be alive today.
If the punishment for carrying an unregistered weapon was swift and consistent possibly the casual carry of a weapon might be less frequent. Special gun courts, trial and sentencing within 30 days, mandatory sentencing, no concurrent sentencing, sentenced to a gulag type facility at hard labour, etc.
If there were measures in place that impacted on the community; ie: eviction from public housing, etc. the community might send a message to it's hoodlums that they are not welcome.
