Model For Freedom Of Speech

Personally I feel what the Iranian protesters are saying is "we believe in freedom of speech as long as we agree with what you are saying. " I might take their protest more seriously if during their demonstration they had condemned the Iranian presidents promoting genocide when it comes to Jews.

Protest over Sun article Pickets angry about writer's call for nuke strike

Seventy-five Iranian Canadians demonstrated yesterday outside the Sun's King St. E. office in protest over a column written by Michael Coren urging a tactical nuclear strike against Iran.

"I was shocked, both as a Canadian and as an Iranian," said Niaz Salimi, director of the Canadian chapter of Centre for Thought, Dialogue and Human Rights in Iran, about her reaction to the column, which was published Sept. 2.

"Freedom of speech is something we all hold dear, because we are directly suffering from the lack of that back home (in Iran). But should I use that to go and hurt you, damage you, damage the country? No."

Others who participated in the peaceful noon rally said Coren's column advocated genocide and bordered on hate speech -- a claim denied by the newspaper.

The column called for a "limited and tactical use of nuclear weapons to destroy Iran's military facilities and its potential nuclear arsenal."
