Let's make it clear up front......this would not be an issue if last February the McGinty government had upheld Canadian law. Their failure to do so has cost the Ontario taxpayers millions of dollars that could be better spent on fixing some of the problems that we continuously hear about on the reservations. What we now have is a situation that is being kept alive by "outside agitators" and in their minds their actions are just as noble as the indians but the bottom line is that the majority of people are running true to form.....they don't really care. This is borne out by the fact that the public outcry thru letters to the editor is minimal.
Voices: Caledonia rally

Should the government step in to block a weekend rally at the site of a native occupation in Caledonia?
The government created this situation and they should have to live with the consequences. I am not sure I support the march, but when everything else fails what choices to you really have?
Gary Haller, Guelph, Oct. 13
This is obviousely a racial issue. Why encourage it by allowing the rally? It's like allowing an anti-Jewish rally take place on a holy day in the Jewish part of town with the main event in front of a synagogue. Sure, it might be a "public right," but that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do.
Carol Isaacs, Deseronto, Oct. 13
Absolutely not. The organizers of the rally have indicated it will be peaceful from their perspective and all they wish to do is make a point.
Richard Sleep, Orillia, Oct. 13
The government has done nothing to enforce the court order banning native protestors from the disputed property. It seems only fair that they should take the same hands-off approach when it comes to non-native protestors.
Dave Smith, Fenwick, Oct. 13
We will have to wait and see what happens but in the following article there is one comment that probably supports the contention this debacle is just an example of homegrown terrorism. The comment "A 30-metre "no-go zone" has been created separating the occupied site from neighbouring houses." is more approppo of Gaza not southern Ontario.
