Alleged club gunman arrested

Suspect in Plazma Lounge shooting was out on bail

By KIM BRADLEY, TORONTO SUN

A man allegedly linked to the brazen shooting of two men at the Plazma Lounge 10 days ago is behind bars.

The accused, who was out on bail on assault charges at the time of the club shooting and was prohibited from owning guns for 10 years, was arrested at his home near Brimley Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E. by Emergency Task Force and undercover officers yesterday at 6:30 p.m.

The 30-year-old is accused of shooting two men, ages 25 and 27, in the Plazma Lounge on Danforth Ave. on Oct. 7.

One victim was shot in the abdomen; the other was shot twice in the chest. Both are expected to survive.

"We haven't recovered the gun yet, but at least he's off the street," said Det. Terry Wray. "We'll be continuing the investigation to recover the gun. Unfortunately he's before the courts already on another matter."

The alleged gunman faces 19 charges, including three counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Simon Charalambides, 30, of Toronto, will be in College Park court this morning.

The owner and manager of the Plazma club were also charged after they allegedly dumped the victims on the sidewalk outside the bar after the shooting and then cleaned up the bloody scene before police arrived.

They are also accused of refusing to let officers inside to investigate the shooting and for allowing smoking inside the club.

Charged are club owner Aleksander Copovic, 29, and manager Christos Makris, 30, both of Toronto.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario suspended their liquor licence.

A shooting on the dance floor of a downtown nightclub was the scene of an early morning shooting that put one man in hospital and left police appealing for witnesses.

About 300 people were in the DNA Lounge, a nightclub in the Adelaide St. W. and Peter St. area when a man in his mid-20s was shot in the backside around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, Toronto police said.

He went to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police officers were outside the club when the shooting happened, having been hired on as extra security.

No witnesses have come forward, leaving investigators with no suspect information, police said.
