All' swell in Liberal-land
Welcome to Happyville, Ont. The hospital is well-funded. There's no wait for surgery. There are doctors and nurses galore. It's a wonderful world.
The schools are even better. Apple-cheeked children, living in a junk-food-free world, skip into classes so tiny you can count the students on the fingers of one hand.
What world is this, you ask? Why, it's the world according to Liberal advertising. You have surely seen these cloying ads on TV and in newspapers extolling the virtues of Dalton McGuinty's government.
A half-page ad in the Globe and Mail last week said: "Right now across Ontario there are more nurses ... more MRI technologists .. And there are more doctors ready to help you ... so you spend less time waiting."
The problem is, it didn't say more than what. More physicians than in 1906? More than in 2003?
In an unfortunate and rather embarrassing placement, the ad ran next to an insightful piece by Globe columnist Murray Campbell, who pointed out that McGuinty has been dogged by many of the problems the Tories wrestled with: Short staffing in hospitals is leading to threatened closures of ERs. Three of the province's largest school boards are unable to balance their budgets.
