PEACE! At What Price?

We have two major world figures putting forth peace proposals; The Pope and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and we have to wonder what the price of peace will cost. It is evident that the Iranians don't plan to include jews in their peace proposal and after thousands of years we don't see any sign that radical Muslims are really willing to live in harmony with other religions. Even within their own "religion" we have seen "cleansing" iniatives in Bosnia, Somolia, Iraq, etc. History is repeating itself...1930s history.

ISTANBUL, Turkey—Pope Benedict's dramatic moment of prayer at Istanbul's most important mosque is being praised as the crowning gesture of reconciliation with this Muslim country.

Benedict XVI yesterday followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, John Paul II, and became only the second pontiff in history to take off his shoes and enter a mosque.

After entering the spectacular Blue Mosque, the Pope bowed his head and clasped his hands at his waist, silently moving his lips in prayer for nearly a minute. His moment of spiritual meditation lasted longer than that of Istanbul's Grand Mufti, Mustafa Cagrici, who prayed out loud beside him.

"This visit will help us find the means and the ways of peace for the good of all humanity," the Pope told the Mufti as the visit was drawing to a close.

Iranian president launches missive to American people

UNITED NATIONS - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a letter to the American people Wednesday that argued their government should end its support for Israel, and pull out of Iraq.

Rebuffed in May when he wrote directly to U.S. President George W. Bush, Ahmadinejad asked in his new missive "what the Zionists have done for the American people," and accused Washington of having caused "many wars and calamities."

He also cautioned Democrats to use their newly won control of Congress to reverse the Bush administration's current policies.

"I am confident that you, the American people, will play an instrumental role in the establishment of justice and spirituality throughout the world," the letter, distributed by the Iranian Mission to the United Nations, said.

While Bush ignored Ahmadinejad's May letter, the new missive arrived as some among the newly empowered Democrats said his administration should hold direct talks with Iran in a bid to try to reduce the record levels of violence in Iraq.

Indeed, the Bush administration has accused Shiite-dominated Iran of using its extensive ties with Iraqi Shiite groups and politicians to promote an undetermined portion of the violence.
