Chanting "Liar, liar, pants on fire! You said fees would go no higher," thousands of college and university students marched through downtown Toronto yesterday pushing the Ontario government to lower tuition.

It was one of a string of protests held by students in 30 cities across Canada to lobby provincial governments for more funding for higher learning.

In Toronto, busloads of students from as far away as Sault Ste. Marie, Peterborough and Barrie braved sub-zero winds alongside peers from across Greater Toronto at a rally at Queen's Park to demand tuition be rolled back to 2004 levels.

"Every generation has a cause to fight for, so this is my bra-burning issue; lower tuition for my children's children," said York University student Crystal Vogan at the rally organized by the Canadian Federation of Students.

The province had slapped a two-year freeze on post-secondary fees in 2004, and lifted it last fall to let campuses raise tuition by up to 5 per cent overall, including 8 per cent more for professional programs such as law and medicine.

Who will they vote for come October?
