By KATHLEEN HARRIS - Sun Media

Sun Media national bureau reporter Kathleen Harris is spending two weeks near Kugluktuk, Nunavut, a western hamlet of about 1,400 that sits on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. She joins about 100 soldiers from Edmonton and a contingent of hardy Canadian Rangers, who will share their traditional Inuit expertise on surviving the extreme conditions to assert Canada's sovereignty in the North. The group will learn how to hunt and fish on the ice. How to skin caribou and fix a frozen Ski-Doo. How to build snow caves and igloos. And they will carry out tactical operations on the barren, remote and frozen landscape in white camouflage gear. As the Arctic sovereignty issue climbs its way to the top of the federal agenda, they will find out how Canada intends to keep its true north strong and free.
