Miller Is Right....Slavery Still Exists In Toronto

But it isn't black that are the victims but rather everyone that pays property taxes. We are continually paying an increased stipend to the massas at city hall while we see our services and our rights diminished in order to satisfy massa and his friends; the unions, social in-activists, environuts, etc. Massa is going to renovate the big house while the sharecroppers in the suburbs deal with potholes in their roads, watermain breaks, increased property taxes, etc.

Miller: 'We still have a long way to go'

British legislators abolished the slave trade 200 years ago, but a "modern version of slavery" still exists, Mayor David Miller said yesterday.

Speaking at a ceremony at City Hall to mark 200 years since the trans-Atlantic slave trade was eradicated in 1807, Miller said Canadians of African descent still suffer from oppression, economic inequality and racism.

"It's clear we still have a long way to go," Miller said. "Our society has not fully come to terms with the legacy of the slave trade. We must eradicate the modern version of slavery."

The United Nations has declared March 25 the international day to commemorate the end of the Atlantic slave trade, which violently uprooted 50 to 100 million Africans over 400 years.

"When Britain stopped that enterprise, a major hemorrhage, an artery was cut," said Afua Cooper, a noted poet, author and historian. "It would take another 80 years for slavery itself."

She noted ships carrying African men, women and children -- they were naked and crowded in the hold -- were still crossing the ocean 200 years ago. They were starved, beaten, whipped and overcome with disease.

"We don't call it a genocide. It should be called a genocide."

Despite its sombre theme, yesterday's ceremony was a celebration of African culture with art, dancing and spirited drumming.

African slaves came to the west with nothing, but reproduced their food, music, clothing, even religion, Cooper said.
