More than 75 per cent of motorists are opposed to toll roads, according to an online poll conducted by the Canadian Automobile Association for South Central Ontario.
The online census polled 12,000 members.
"Almost all say they already pay too much in fuel, taxes and licensing fees and are seeing little in return in terms of investment in infrastructure," Faye Lyons, government relations specialist for CAASCO, said in a press release yesterday.
Tolls are a hot topic in Toronto, with an integrated transportation strategy to be presented to Mayor David Miller later this month.
Up for debate is the viability of a congestion charge, which is similar to the one currently used in London, England, for commuters who don't live within the city or pay taxes --but still use the city's roads.
