VANCOUVER -- Cindy Pete was born in Moricetown, a native village in Gitxsan Wet'suwet'en territory on the shores of the Bulkley River in northwestern B.C.

Today, 26-year-old Ms. Pete lives in Vancouver, where she recently landed a full-time job as a daycare worker after graduating last year from an early childhood education program.

"I've been looking after children since I was a teenager so I decided to use that gift," Ms. Pete said yesterday, as children played around her.

Ms. Pete's new job puts her in the ranks of thousands of Canadians who found work last month, pushing the employment tally well past economists' forecasts. She also reflects another aspect of the job market in Alberta and B.C.: higher rates of employment for aboriginal people.
