Clogged Arteries Lead To Major Heart Failure

What is the city council doing about this problem.....making it more difficult for drivers with traffic calming and speed bumps, etc. won't solve the problem.

Toronto's clogged arteries

By THE CITY OF TORONTO AND TTC

UNION STATION: A vital connection, the station's narrow subway platform is inadequate for passenger volumes on two busy subway lines.

DON VALLEY PARKWAY: This critical stretch of the city's transportation anatomy operates at capacity in peak periods. The northbound and southbound lanes, between Hwy. 401 and Eglinton Ave., each carry as many as 100,000 vehicles in a day.

KENNEDY STATION: On the subway system's eastern limb, trains on the Scarborough RT arriving at Kennedy Station in morning rush hour period are overcrowded. More trains are needed to carry all the people. The track and platform arrangement at Kennedy Station also limit the frequency of service.

BLOOR-YONGE STATION: The solar plexus of Toronto's subway system, it's the busiest station, with very heavy volumes of passengers transferring between two major subway lines. Platforms on the Bloor-Danforth subway line are narrow and constrained. Ridership volumes on Yonge-line subway trains in the morning peak period are above capacity. Stairways, escalators, and hallways connecting the two lines are narrow and congested.

AIRPORT: A missing appendage. Toronto requires a transit link to Pearson International Airport. A proposed high-speed rail link from Union Station to Pearson -- known as Blue 22 -- is now the subject of an environmental assessment.

HWY. 401: A critical part of the highway system that makes up the backbone of Toronto's transportation network, 420,000 vehicles use the 401 near Hwy. 400 on a typical day. The stretch of the 401 that runs across Toronto is one of the busiest in North America.

DOWNTOWN: The city's centre has lots of slow moving areas as anyone trying to get on the Gardiner Expressway from University or Spadina Aves. in the afternoon rush hour will attest. Bad weather and construction just make matters worse. A problem location for transit riders is King and Bathurst Sts. During morning rush hour, there's overcrowding of eastbound streetcars which results in customers being left behind. Streetcars are delayed by traffic congestion.

GARDINER EXPRESSWAY: The flow along this sluggish artery hits capacity at peak times with the exception of the eastern stretch that runs from Bay St. to the Don Valley Parkway. The westbound lanes, from about Parklawn Rd. to The East Mall and the eastbound lanes, from Royal York Rd. to The East Mall, each carry as many as 120,000 vehicles in a day.

Last word: In the final analysis this blog is a relief valve for my rants/raves.
