Bill C-22 cheats Ontario, but MPs stay quiet
November 19, 2007

This week, Premier Dalton McGuinty plans to send a letter to all 106 Ontario MPs in Ottawa appealing for their support against new federal legislation that would blatantly discriminate against this province.
It should be a slam dunk for McGuinty, but it isn't, and there's a reason why.
First, some background: the legislation at issue, Bill C-22, was re-introduced in the Commons last week by Government House Leader Peter Van Loan. (A previous version of the bill died on the order paper earlier this year.)
The bill is an attempt to meet the longstanding demands of the three fastest-growing provinces – Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta – for more seats in the House of Commons so that their numbers reflect their populations.
But Bill C-22 only partially rights this wrong by giving Alberta five more seats and B.C. seven more, thereby bringing their representation roughly in line with their populations. Ontario would get just 10 more seats, or half of its entitlement.
McGuinty last week called this move "unjust."
