Opposition MPs take up Montana death row case

Stephane Dion has taken up the case of a Canadian man sitting on death row in Montana.
The Liberal leader has written the state's governor asking him to commute Ronald Allen Smith's death sentence.
Smith was convicted of murdering two people in 1982.
Dion says he wrote the letter because the Tory government has decided to ignore Canadian policy by refusing to officially appeal Smith's death sentence, which is outlawed in Canada.
"Canada abolished the death penalty 31 years ago," Dion said in question period on Thursday.
He said Canadian policy has been to ask foreign governments not to kill Canadian citizens facing death for crimes committed in their countries.
"That's why I wrote to the Governor of Montana today asking (that) he commute the death sentence against a Canadian there. Will the government do the same?"
The Tories recently said Canada would no longer call for clemency for Canadians facing the death penalty in democratic countries.
NDP Leader NDP Jack Layton has also sent a personal letter to Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer. Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe has started a petition he wants to send to Montana with the signatures of opposition MPs......
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson didn't accept opposition criticism that Canada's international human rights reputation is being harmed by the new Tory position.
Nicholson said that "individuals who commit multiple murders and mass-murders abroad . . . cannot necessarily count on the Canadian government to claim clemency and repatriation back to this country.''
But Dion argued that the Tories are walking away from Canadian principles.
"We are weakened as a nation when we fail to stand up for our fellow citizens who face such dire consequences," he said in a press release.
Smith says the death penalty is a punishment that should be left in the past.
"It's an unnecessary tool. In this day and age, it's an archaic idea that shouldn't be bought into," he told CTV Newsnet's The Verdict earlier this month.

perhaps so did the tories.
In your efforts to paint Dion as trying to 'free' criminals, perhaps it escapes your notice that regardless of the crime, Canadians do not support capital punishment, but that does not mean the criminal is "free".
As for the accused child molester, who is in federal government right now, for the last 2 years? What have they done about it?
Who allowed 4 out of 5 crime bills to die on the table when they prorogued parliament? You do know that the liberals agreed to fast track 4 out 5 bills right?
I don't expect any reasonable answers god forbid.
Instead we are treated to more bullshit spewed in this blog.
It looks like the liberals/ndp/bloc are not the only ones to take the bait.
1) If you check polls you will find that your comment about "Canadians" support no death penalty is wrong. It is pretty close to even.
2)Bail, etc. is the purvue of the province and who do we have a queens park and how long has he been there.
3)Why not 5 of the 5 bills and this is, as you must know, a mute point because the senate is loaded with bleeding heart libers.
4)I want to remind you that you are under no obligation to come to this blog and the main reason I don't respond to most of your rants is there is no point....it would be like farting in the wind; you would get momentary pleasure from inhaling the odor but that would quickly pass and you would revert.
I see. I didn't realize the province can set laws for criminal law. I was under the impression judges had the responsibility according to what is allowed by law. As a simple citizen I thought that given the tories' efforts to limit bail.
4 out of 5 is pretty good in my books, especially with a minority government, and the 5th had concerns regarding constitutionality, but it seems given the recent bunch of bills we see the tories are more concerned with headlines, and votes than they are with a law that will stand up in court. Nothing to worry about?
Although I would be remiss in not saying it is a good thing to have tougher laws regarding crime.
But lets clear the BS hmmm?
