Counterpoint: Ted Menzies on Marc Garneau's economic nostrums
Posted: July 14, 2009, 9:00 AM by NP Editor

Last Thursday, Liberal MP Marc Garneau published an overheated, and ultimately empty, diatribe in the National Post ( "Harper has mishandled the recession"). He argued that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada have not responded properly to the global recession.

Mr. Garneau would have us believe that the Liberals, alone in the world, foresaw the magnitude of the ongoing economic crisis. The public record would suggest otherwise: At the start of 2008, when Prime Minister Harper cautioned about potential turbulent economic times ahead, the Liberals scoffed at him. Here's what Liberal finance critic John McCallum said at the time: "The (Conservative) government is overstating the risks because many experts expect the Canadian economy to grow by up to 2.5% this year."

What was the Liberal party's major policy prescription for the Canadian economy back then (and still now)? A massive new carbon tax that would negatively impact every single aspect of Canada's economy. Does that sound helpful?
