Torontonians are buying more porn than ever before -- and they're getting it the good old fashioned, pre-Internet way. Sales of "female-friendly" porn DVDs have tripled this year at Good For Her, a store that sells sex toys, books, videos and more, manager Channelle Gallant tells Dave McGinn.

Q Why the huge burst of porn purchases?
GALLANT: Because people found out that better porn exists. I think it's kind of like 'If you build it, they will come." We just needed to let people know that there was porn out there that is more female-friendly.
Q Just like video killed the radio star, I would have thought the Internet killed the DVD porno sales.
GALLANT: Not at all. Have you tried looking at porn online?
Q Ummmm, maaaaaybe.
GALLANT: It's often very poor quality. There's so much gross-out sex. And if you want to find good quality online you're still going to pay for it anyway.
Q So what kind of porn are you selling now that has made sales triple this year?
GALLANT: What we specialize in are female-friendly porn titles.
Q What's "female friendly" porn?
GALLANT: It shows women getting their fair share of pleasure, so it has to focus on the woman's enjoyment of the sex. Another thing is that there was some female involvement in making the porn. And I find the men are better looking. When porn is made with women in mind they chose better looking male leads. Also, a lot of people assume that female-friendly porn is soft focus and soft core. But it's not. There's diversity.
Q What kind of people are buying porn these days?
GALLANT: It's primarily women in their mid-20s to mid-40s. And a lot of couples. We get a lot of guys who are looking to watch something with their partner.
Q I would have thought it would be just guys.
GALLANT: That's your own bias showing through -- assuming that women don't want porn. They absolutely do. The majority of our porn sales are to women.
