Pitfield: Mayor 'has not been truthful"
By ZEN RURYK, CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF
Mayoral candidate Jane Pitfield branded Mayor David Miller a liar yesterday as she unveiled a plan to make City Hall more accountable to Torontonians.
Pitfield promised to conduct an external audit of city finances, issue an annual report card on how well she lives up to her campaign promises and impose strict limits on the length of time city reports can be kept confidential.
"I can say that unfortunately David Miller has not been truthful," charged Pitfield, a city councillor. "He has not been truthful with the taxpayers in general and there have been many people who have, unfortunately, been lied to by David Miller -- and I'm one of them."
Referring to a past controversy involving a project in her Don Valley West (Ward 26) constituency, Pitfield said Miller once recommended she take a business trip to Cairo, Egypt. However, Miller later said he never recommended she take the trip, according to Pitfield.
"That is just one of many examples I am sorry to say," added Pitfield. "But, if the mayor of this city can't tell the truth, then I think we have a major issue."
When contacted by the Sun, John Laschinger, Miller's campaign manager, dismissed Pitfield's accusations, saying his candidate "won't dignify it with a comment."
Pitfield said there have been more secret reports and backroom meetings in the last three years than at any time since was elected to city council in 1998.
