Gentrification started with the Cabbagetown whitewashers and we lost virtually thousands of low cost transient housing spaces but it started the trend for boomers and NIMBYs to forsake the suburbs an move "where the actions is" and so basically it became a matter of demand and supply. Everything seems to be about creativity and I contend the only creative iniatives are how to get more $$$$ out of taxpayer's pockets. How much have we sunk into the Wychwood Barn Artscape fiasco.
