Restaurant backs off, staff keep 20¢ raise

A popular Toronto restaurant has backed down after trying to claw back most of the extra 20 cents an hour it has to pay its minimum-wage waiters.

Joe Badali's, on Front St. at University Ave., told servers it would start charging them $2 a shift to cover the costs of washing their aprons and providing notepads and cash envelopes.

That charge – up from 50 cents a shift – would wipe out most of the benefit waiters would get from the government's decision to increase the minimum wage.

"It seems sort of unfair that we're getting screwed out of our little bit of a raise," a server said before the restaurant backtracked.

The restaurant reversed itself after the Toronto Star asked about the charge.

It denied the $2-a-shift charge was a reaction to the increase in the minimum wage. But a memo to restaurant staff made prominent mention of the wage increase.
