Loney said outside court. "Any number of us may be a threat to society and that's not sufficient cause for doing that." I have to wonder what he considers just cause...sending planes into the TD Center?
Ex-hostage offers to help suspected terroristOct. 2, 2006. 01:43 PM
A Canadian peace activist once held hostage in Iraq is willing to stand surety for a suspected terrorist who wants to be released on bail. James Loney says it's a matter of fundamental justice that Mahmoud Jaballah be released. Last November, Loney was snatched at gunpoint off the streets of Baghad along with three other Christian peace activists.
Jaballah's lawyers say two others detained on national security certificates have won bail and similar conditions should apply to Jaballah, who is accused of being a communications agent for al-Qaida.Loney says it's wrong to deprive someone of their liberty without just cause.
Jaballah, a father of six, has been detained without charge or trial since 2001 as a threat to national security. He wants Federal Court to release him on bail, something he has twice been denied. Jaballah's lawyers and supporters argue that even if he is considered dangerous, stringent bail conditions can be put in place. "You cannot indefinitely deprive a person of their freedom on the pretext that they may be a threat,"
Loney said outside court. "Any number of us may be a threat to society and that's not sufficient cause for doing that." Loney said he was touched when he learned that Jaballah and two other suspected terrorists detained in Canada had written a letter pleading for the hostages' safe release in Iraq.
