NDP getting squeezed in new political dynamic
With focus on environment, eyes turn to energized Green party and new Liberal leader

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper's question to Elizabeth May was short and direct.

"I just want to know, what do you have against the NDP?" he asked her.

The two had met in April at a gala event to fete former prime minister Brian Mulroney as the "greenest" prime minister. At the time, May was still executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada. Her response to Harper was equally blunt.

"My answer was: `Plenty. They conspired with you to bring down the government on the opening day of the climate-change conference,'" May recalled this week.

Today, May is making headlines — and even a few waves — as the new leader of the Green party. Her brief spring conversation with Harper underscores the tensions at play between the Greens and the New Democrats, two parties that put a priority on the environment, but have serious quarrels over tactics.

In the federal election less than a year ago, bullish NDP organizers fancied the conceit that they might be able to replace the beleaguered Liberals as the home for progressive voters.

Today, it's the New Democrats who find themselves squeezed.

Council job must look pretty good right now......
