Some Toronto city councillors, seemingly devoid of realistic solutions to the city's massive budget crisis, are nevertheless engaging in pointless grandstanding by persisting not only in attacking proposed new taxes for the city, but also the service cuts that are about to go into effect because they blocked those taxes.
The latest example involves Councillor Michael Walker, who has produced a legal opinion arguing that Toronto administrators have no right to impose service reductions without the approval of city council. Walker wants to hold a special council meeting to debate the cuts, which include the closing of community centres on Mondays, delaying the opening of outdoor skating rinks for a month, shutting 16 library branches on Sundays, and slower pothole repairs.
But the legal view cited by Walker is hardly the last word.
