Miller Bridge Fetish Haunts Him

He got elected by promising to stop the bridge to Toronto Island and in the throes of victory when Harper challenged the liberals in Ottawa he snubbed the conservatives and the result is that no one in the Harper camp wants anything to do with him and as Sue Ann points out this resulted in the approval of a sound business being started....Porter Airlines.

Ready for takeoff

By SUE-ANN LEVY

I realize His Blondness won’t take kindly to advice from me. But, honestly, it’s high time he put to rest his ill-fated fight against a revitalized Island Airport.

Like it or not, it looks like Porter Airlines is poised to take flight from the Island in just a few short weeks.

Federal transportation officials cleared the airline for takeoff early last week when they granted Porter its air operator certificate and licences.

Porter president and CEO Bob Deluce told me those were the “final hurdles” and they’ll probably be ready to commence their 10 round-trip weekday flights to Ottawa around the middle of this month. Their second Q400 will be delivered this week, about the same they may be ready to “go live” with their computer reservation system, he added.

How much more proof does Mayor David Miller need that he got beat at his own game by a businessman who is far more adept, in my view, at getting what he wants? It’s obvious to everyone that the one election promise the mayor managed to keep — to kill the $22-million bridge to the Island Airport — has been a bomb.

But there he was last week, engaging in his ongoing flight of fancy about the federal Conservatives turning over the Toronto Port Authority to the city.

I know His Blondness and the Islanders who prop him up have their heads in the clouds, but does he really think the same Stephen Harper Consevatives he snubbed in last January’s election will ever give him the time of day now that they’re the government?
