59% Of Toronto Voters Can Blow It Out Their Ass

When it comes to supporting or condemning the actions of the Toronto City Council over the next four years. If you didn't think it was important enough to get out and vote then your opinions have the same level of importance.

Percentage up, but voter turnout down

It always pays to be skeptical of government-provided numbers -- and that includes the city's figures for Monday's voter turnout.

The city pegs the unofficial voter turnout for the election at 41.1%. One would assume the number of people who cast ballots is greater than the total in 2003 when the voter turnout was 38%.

Not so. While the official number will be released today, city spokesman Brad Ross said it's estimated that about 584,000 voters cast ballots on Monday. That's down from 2003 when about 692,000 people -- 108,000 more voters -- went to the polls.

Ross explained the key to understanding the apparently contradictory numbers is the overall size of the list. There were about 1.6 million people on the voters' list in 2003, pared down to about 1.4 million this year.
