'Good guy' shot dead in home

Loved and well-known as “Jack of all trades,” a Scarborough man who took in street kids and taught them a trade was shot to death in the Malvern-area home he shared with three brothers.

Police were looking for a gunman after Colves "Jack" Maggoe, about 50, was shot in the stomach inside the Horselea Hills Dr. house, in the Finch Ave. E. and Neilson Rd. area, at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Maggoe, who operated a flooring company, auto repair shop and scrap metal business, was known by friends and neighbours as Jack of all trades because of his busy lifestyle and numerous skills.

A neighbour called police after hearing the sound of gunfire.

Next-door neighbour Mark Hamilton was in his basement watching television when the incident occurred. He didn’t hear the shooting but stepped outside to see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles and paramedics bringing his neighbour out on a stretcher.

“It’s upsetting, and it’s just too close to home,” the shocked neighbour said.

“This is Malvern. It’s upsetting, and it’s just too close to home,” Hamilton said.

He said the victim and three brothers have lived in the single-storey semi-detached brick house next door for about five years. He described his neighbours as a hard-working family.

He said since a drive-by shooting on the street two years ago, police are constantly patrolling the neighbourhood.

“I’m shocked that this has happened, and I know the police are doing the best they can,” Hamilton said.

Within an hour of the shooting, several friends and relatives had come to the scene. Friends described Maggoe as someone who took in street kids and tried to teach them a trade in one of his businesses.

“He’s a good guy. Everybody likes him and he’s known as Jack of all trades, because he does everything. He’s always working and helping people out,” said Mano Persaud, 25, who works as a mechanic at Maggoe’s auto repair shop.

“I just want to know why anybody would do that to him.”

Initial reports indicated that two men, including one armed with a handgun, ran west toward Crow Trail.
