Miller Gets More Support From Queen's Park

Toronto garbage deal becoming a mess
By RANDY RICHMOND, SUN MEDIA

LONDON, Ont. -- The Ontario legislature has passed a resolution that could stop Toronto trash from coming to the London area.

Trouble is, no one knows what happens now. Conservative MPP Norm Miller's resolution passed by a 22-3 vote in a nearly empty legislature yesterday.

The successful resolution requires:

- The region affected by the Green Lane landfill expansion be a willing host to Toronto's garbage;

- The landfill to close as scheduled in 2018;

- Toronto reduce its waste so it can stop using the landfill by 2012.

The government is under a moral obligation to act on the resolution, said Brendan Howe, spokesman for Conservative Leader John Tory.

Miller asked McGuinty during question period to support the resolution passed earlier in the day.

McGuinty referred the question to Environment Minister Laurel Broten.

Broten said only that the landfill site was safe.
