Ont. can't cut taxes without federal funds: Sorbara

Ontario will have difficulty cutting taxes without more money from Ottawa for health care, infrastructure and unemployment, provincial Finance Minister Greg Sorbara said Thursday.

Ontario would like to cut taxes, Sorbara told a pre-budget finance committee, but first needs the federal government to fix the way the province is funded.

"Tax reform is an important part of the agenda," he said during questioning in committee. "The issue that will hold up tax reform is the broken fiscal machinery that defines the economic relationship between the federal government and provincial governments."

"To put it bluntly, Ontario - over the past several years - is always on the verge of not having the resources that it needs. During that same time, the federal government is awash in cash."
