New Works Boss Proposes Garbage Gestapo

Hire more city employees, fine taxpayers and spend millions buying our own landfill site! Anyone who has been following the antics of our left wing mayor and his clowns will not be surprised with their solution. They have turned taxpayers in garbage sorters and turned taxpayer homes into transfer states but they refuse to accept the fact that incineration technology has come a long way and the investment would not only go a long way to solving our garbage problem but would also provide energy for heating and electricity.

Public works boss finds curbside bags hold blue box, green bin refuse

By ZEN RURYK, CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF

Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker went snooping through other people's garbage yesterday -- and he didn't like what he found.

The newly appointed public works committee chairman helped a garbage collection crew in Scarborough pick up curbside trash in a residential neighbourhood.

He randomly opened several bags to find diapers, chicken, paper and other waste that should have gone in the blue box or green bin.

De Baeremaeker said his informal survey shows it's clear the city has to embark on a massive education program to persuade residents to be more discerning about how they dispose of trash.

"You would think that everybody knows how to recycle, but obviously they don't."

When Mayor David Miller this week appointed De Baeremaeker to head Toronto's public works committee, the Scarborough councillor joined the inner power circle that will lead the city for the next four years.

He will play a key role in keeping Miller's election promise to use recycling and other waste reduction programs to gobble up 70% of residential trash annually by 2010, leaving only 30% for landfill. The city last year diverted 40%.

De Baeremaeker yesterday joined trash collectors Jerome Martin and Steve Kendrick as they picked up waste on Meldazy Dr. and Kencliff Cres., in the Lawrence Ave. E.-McCowan Rd. area.

As he went through the bags, De Baeremaeker estimated that two-thirds of the debris should have gone in the green bin or blue box.`
