EDITORIAL: Caught in a revolving door

A new study of the hospitalization patterns of people with mental illness released last week has confirmed a decades-old problem.

That is, that ever since these patients started to be “de-institutionalized” years ago, they’ve been stuck in a revolving door. Governments sold “de-institutionalization” to the public as the humane — and inexpensive — way of caring for the mentally ill.

The theory was that we could cut the time these patients spent in hospitals by looking after them in the community with proper supports. And that the cost to the public would decline, since having more people living on their own would reduce the need for hospital beds.

Nice theory. It failed.

A report released last week by the Canadian Institute for Health Information produced stats showing not all that much has changed from the old days.
